Permeable Block Paving

Our permeable block paving is designed specifically to allow rainwater to be filtered into the sub-base rather than run-off into public drainage systems. If you’re looking to lay permeable paving blocks, ensure you also view our range of permeable aggregates.

What is permeable block paving?

Reduce the risk of flooding with our permeable block paving.

Where conventional block paving collects water on its surface and allows run-off onto public highways, permeable block paving is designed to allow rainfall to pass directly into a sub-base. This means the water drains away naturally rather than into public drainage systems.

This makes permeable block paving a cost-effective and eco-friendly choice for your driveway.

Do I need permeable block paving?

Believe it or not, permeable block paving could be more of a necessity than a frill.

You could even find yourself on the wrong side of the law if you don’t lay free-draining paving. This is because the government are going to great efforts to manage the flood-causing surface water draining onto public highways.

Permeable block paving also has practical applications for day-to-day life. In the winter, as there is no surface water to freeze, you won’t have to worry about slipping over on ice.

Permeable block paving also helps to quell droughts in the dry season, by returning water naturally to the table.

How do I lay permeable block paving?

It might have a similar finish, but permeable block paving has a different laying process to conventional block paving.

One of the main differences is that permeable paving is laid on top of a sub-base that has enough space to store water. If you plan to use permeable block paving for your driveway, you’ll need to consider height levels, soil permeability and soil strength.

Similarly, you can’t use standard building materials to lay this type of paving – you will need to purchase specific permeable materials. For example, you would use permeable drainage aggregate as a sub-base, alongside their permeable bedding aggregate and permeable jointing aggregate. These materials are high quality, free draining and all available from Simply Paving.
