What are garden stepping stones and what are they used for?
Stepping stones are sets of stone slabs that are arranged to form a pathway, typically through gardens. These stepping stones are viewed as a more cost-effective, lower maintenance alternative to paved garden paths.
Along with being affordable, garden stepping stones serve the extra benefit of offering an attractive, charming appeal to outdoor spaces. In fact, garden stepping stones offer a more understated look that blends seamlessly with both traditional and contemporary styles.
What types of decorative stepping stones do you sell?
Here at Simply Paving, our stepping stones collection caters to all styles and paver preferences.
Want the handcrafted feel of natural stone formations? Our Bradstone Random Stepping Stones in Weathered Brown perfectly complement country cottage garden setups. Or perhaps you’d prefer stepping stones with a slightly more modern motif? Our Bradstone Round Stepping Stones in Cream Blend bring neat uniformity to your garden pathway.
We even stock Stonewood Stepping Stones in Antique Brown for those who love the look of natural wood but want the inherent durability of stone. These faux log stepping stones, in particular, are great for rustic styles, channelling the peaceful vibes of a forest footpath.
What types of decorative stepping stones do you sell?
Compared to paved pathways, installing stepping stones in your garden is a relatively straightforward process. Yet, there are still some laying essentials to familiarise yourself with before cracking on.
First, you need to dig a trench where your intended stepping stone path will lay (this needs to be 20mm deeper than the thickness of your stones). Then, bind each stepping stone to the bottom of your trench with semi-dry mortar mix (read our guide on how to mix mortar for more info). Once all stepping stones hav e been laid, backfill the rest of your trench, either with gravel or soil. Job done!
For a more detailed breakdown of how to lay stepping stones, read our in-depth guide over at our Advice Centre.
Can I use any type of paving slab as a decorative stepping stone?
Technically, any type of paving slab can be used as a garden stepping stone – you just need to know how to cut pavers down to size. However, this can be an arduous task that requires specialist equipment, especially for durable pavers such as porcelain slabs.
To make life easier for yourself, consider buying specialist stepping stones instead. These are specifically designed to be used for pathways and are ready to install straight out of the pack. Stepping stones are often cheaper, too, with some stones available for as little as £8.
